Anasuya Shankar Biography

Anasuya Shankar was a fictional writer of Kannada language who wrote short stories and novels. She is popularly known by her pen name - Triveni. Her novel Avala Mane earned the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award in 1960. Famous filmmaker Puttanna Kanagal adapted two of her novels as feature films - Belli Moda (1967) and Sharapanjara (1971). Her sister Aryamba Pattabhi, her cousin Vani and her uncle B. M. Srikantaiah are well-known writers of Kannada language. Triveni died at a very young age of only 34 in Mysore in the year 1963. She died of pulmonary embolism 10 days after giving birth to her daughter Meera.

 

Anasuya Shankar was born on 1 September 1928 in the Chamarajapuram of Mysore, present Karnataka. B. M. Krishnaswamy and Thangamma are her parents. She also had another name, Bhagirathi. Her family had three more famous writers – her younger sister Aryamba Pattabhi, her cousin Vani and her uncle B. M. Srikantaiah. Her uncle was also a well-known translator. Anasuya was brilliant in studies and she completed her graduation in political science with a gold medal. It was in 1947. Four years later she married S. N. Shankar, an English professor in 1951.

 

For writings she chose Triveni as her pen name – the place where ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were immersed, and it’s a sort of respect given to the father of nation. She published her first novel Apasvara in 1953 at the age of 25 and in the next 9-10 years till her death she published 19 more novels and 3 short story collections. Many of her works expressed internal emotional conflicts of women, their thoughts, frustrations etc. 5 of were novels were converted to films and her house in the city was later converted to a museum.
