Anant Prasad Sharma Biography

Anant Prasad Sharma was a prominent politician and parliamentarian who hailed from Gaudarh, Bhojpur District, Bihar. In 1974 he was made the Minister of State for Industry, Government of India by then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. He also served as Governor of the State of Punjab and the State of West Bengal. Anand served as a member of Lok Sabha two times and Rajya Sabha three times. He represented Buxar constituency in both 3rd and 5th Lok Sabha. He was a member of Indian National Congress.

 

Anant Sharma was born 25 December 1919 in the village of Gaudarh, then a part of Shahabad District. He was born into a middle class family as the son of Ram Naresh Sharma. He completed graduation from Bihar National College, Patna. While at college he joined students’ politics and was a member of All India Students Federation. He served as the Assistant General Secretary of the Bihar unit. He discontinued his college studies and joined freedom struggle movement. He was a railway union leader, and has been a prominent trade union leader. He was married to Tara Devi, and the couple had 6 children.

 

He joined active politics after Indian independence. He became the President of Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee in 1966. He contested Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 1962, and for the second time in 1971. He won both these elections and during his second term, he was induced into the cabinet of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He remained member of the Rajya Sabha thrice, 1968-1971, 1978-1983 and 1984-1988 till his death. He was active in political career till his death in 1988 aged 68. He served as the governor of West Bengal from10 Oct, 1983 to 16 Aug, 1984.
