Anandshankar Dhruv Biography

Anandshankar Dhruv was a Gujarati scholar, writer, educationist and editor who lived during the period, 25 February 1869 - 7 April 1942. He is fondly called Acharya Anandshankar Dhruv, signifying that he is a guru or teacher. He also owned numerous disciples including the famous Gujarati writer, Ramprasad Bakshi. He served as the chairman of Inter University Board for some time. He authored books using the pen names - Mumukshu and Hind-hitchintak. He served as administrator of several literary organizations and has remained as the president of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad.

Dr. Anandshankar Bapubhai Dhruv, shortly called Anandshankar Dhruv was born on 25 February 1869 as the son of an officer of Kathiawar Agency. He studied English and Sanskrit since young. While doing his master’s, he started teaching Sanskrit at Gujarat College in 1893. After completing his studies he joined Elphinstone College, and later served as the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University in 1920. He served as administrator of several educational institutions and literary organizations too.

He started a monthly magazine Vasant in 1902 and served as an editor of the magazine, Sudarshan. As a writer most of his works dealt with Indian philosophy and Sanskrit literature. He also wrote about western philosophy and culture. He also published several essays on Hindu religion and philosophy. Acharya Anandshankar Dhruv mostly authored books based on religious beliefs and faith, philosophy, spirituality etc. Such subjects attracted him most. He was an authority of Sanskrit language. A renowned scholar, an alumnus and former principal and Vice-chancellor of BHU, he passed away on 7 April 1942 aged 72. His bust is now placed in Gujarat University.
