Ananda Shankar Biography

Ananda Shankar, son of great dancer Uday Shankar is a popular musician from Bengal. He is also the nephew of sitarist Ravi Shankar. He blends nicely, eastern and western tunes to create compositions. His father was prolific in fusion dance forms and has conducted many tours worldwide, popularizing Indian classical art forms. In 1974, he received National award for best music director for the movie, Chorus. This movie received National award for best feature film as well. His released albums include - Ananda Shankar: A Life in Music - The Best of the EMI Years, Ananda Shankar, Ananda Shankar: Shubh- The Auspicious, Ananda Shankar And His Music, India Remembers Elvis, Missing you, A Musical Discovery of India, Sa-Re-Ga Machan, Temptations, Ananda, Walking on and Arpan. 

 

Ananda Shankar was born in Almora in Uttarakhand, as the son of Amala and Uday Shankar. He is also the nephew of renowned sitarist Ravi Shankar. After completing schooling from The Scindia School, he studied at Banaras Hindu University. Later he travelled to Los Angeles, where he played with many contemporary musicians including Jimi Hendrix. His first music album was released in the year 1970 for Reprise records. It featured original Indian classical compositions alongside sitar-based cover versions. Once returned he continued his fusion experiments and released his second album - Ananda Shankar And His Music. It included jazz funk mix with Indian classical instruments like tabla, sitar and mridangam. It was quite successful too.

 

During 1990’s, his popularity in west started increasing once again. His music was brought to a wider audience with the release of Blue Note Records’ popular 1996 compilation album, Blue Juice Vol. 1. It featured the two standout tracks from Ananda Shankar And His Music, "Dancing Drums" and "Streets of Calcutta". He has also composed music for a Tamil film.
