Ananda Chandra Agarwala Biography

Raibahadur Ananda Chandra Agarwala was a noted writer, historian and poet from Assam. He was the brother of noted poet, editor and journalist, Chandra Kumar Agarwala, one of the pioneers of modern Assamese literature. Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, the noted writer, poet and first film maker was his nephew. Ananda Chandra Agarwala was also known as a historian, translator and administrative officer. He was known by the name - Bhangoni Kunwor in the literary circles. As an administrative officer, he served as the president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1934. He was honoured with the prestigious title of Raibahadur.

 

His poetry collections are included in the book Jilikoni. As a historian, he has published a few books. An Account of Assam, Goalparar Purani Bibaran and Aspects of history and culture are his contributions to the field of history. Police Manual, Kumal Path and Adi Path are other published books. He has written several text books for academic purposes. For his fine translation of several English poems into Assamese, he was called Bhangoni Kunwor. He served 32 years in police service and his Police manual published in 1906 was based on his experiences.

 

Ananda Chandra Agarwala was born on 5 September, 1874 in Borngabari, Tezpur of Assam. He served 32 years in police service. His brother Chandra Kumar Agarwala was an eminent writer and one of the pioneers of modern Assamese literature. He was also a pioneer in the journalism movement of Assam and started many literary movements in Assam. Ananda Chandra Agarwala passed away in 1940, two years after his brother’s death.
