Amritpal Singh Biography

Amritpal Singh is an Indian professional basketball player from Punjab. He plays in the centre position. He is the first Indian to sign up for Australia’s National Basketball League. In August 2015, he along with Amjyot Singh became the first Indian males to sign a professional basketball contract abroad, when the duo signed a one-year contract with the Tokyo Excellence of the National Basketball Development League (NBDL), the second-tier league in Japan. One of the most valuable players from Indian side, he last played for the Sydney Kings of the National Basketball League. He was offered the centre a full-time deal, after he impressed them during their rookie camp.

 

Amritpal Singh was born on January 5, 1991 in Ganna Pind, Punjab into a family of farmers. During younger days he played Kabaddi. He was introduced to the game of basketball only in 2009 in his late teens. In March 2010, he joined the Ludhiana Basketball Academy. He joined Western Railway Mumbai very soon, and has also played basketball for railways. He played for ONGC Uttarakhand Dehradoon in 2015 and he was very soon signed by Tokyo Excellence of Japan's National Basketball Development League (NBDL), along with Amjyot Singh, another star player of Indian team.

 

The following season he returned to ONGC Uttarakhand Dehradoon, and later played for Pune Peshwas in 2017 and Sydney Kings during 2017 – 2018. He is a recipient of NBDL champion (2016). FIBA Asia Championship 2011 marked his debut in national team. As a member of national player, he has represented India at 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, 2014 FIBA Asia Cup, 2015 FIBA Asia Championship, 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge, 2016 FIBA Asia Champions Cup and 2017 FIBA Asia Cup.
