Amrish Puri Biography

Amrish Puri was an Indian film actor who is involved in the Indian theater movement in the 1960s. He has played negative roles in many Hindi films. He was famous for his role in Hindi film Mr. India as Mogambo and as Mola Ram in Hollywood film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

 

He was born on 22nd June 1932 in Nawanshahr in the Jalandhar district of Punjab. His parents are Sri Nihal Singh Puri and Ved Kaur. He has four siblings, Chaman Puri, Madan Puri, Chandrakanta and Harish Puri. He started his career as an employee of State Insurance Corporation. At that time he started his performance at the Prithvi Theatre. Then he became very famous as a stage actor and received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 1979.

 

He acted in films of many languages like Hindi, Kannada, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hollywood. He started to appear in many television ads and entered film industry only at the age of 40. He married Urmila Diveker in 1957 and has one son Rajiv.

 

He has acted in more than four hundred films and mostly in the antagonistic character. His debut film was Prem Pujari in 1971. Then he acted in supporting roles in art films like Nishant, Manthan and Bhumika.

 

His catch phrase in the well known film Mogambo, Mogambo Khush Hua became best recognized in the Hindi film industry. He also did many positive supporting roles and acted in the blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. He acted in Kannada films like Kaadu. He acted with Mohanlal in the Malayalam film Jailor. He acted in many Telugu films like Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari, Aditya 369, Aswamedham, Aakhari Poratam, Major Chandrakanth, etc.

 

His role in the film Gandhi in 1982 by Richard Attenborough introduced him to international audiences. He has won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for the film Meri Jung, Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Gardish and Virasat and was nominated for the award eight times. He received Maharashtra State Gaurav Puraskar award in 1991 and Best Actor Award in the Singapore International Film Festival and Sydney Film Festival.
