Ampareen Lyngdoh Biography

Ampareen Lyngdoh is an Indian politician from north-east state of Meghalaya. She currently represents East Shillong Constituency in the 10th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. She has previously served as Cabinet Minister in the Government of Meghalaya during 2008-2013 and for the second term during 2013-2018 completing 10 years, handling different portfolios such as Public Works Department, Information Technology, Information & Communication, Urban Development, Housing, Labour, Education and Tourism. She was the Chairman of the Meghalaya Urban Development Agency, while she served as the state minister of Urban Development. She was the only female legislator in the Meghalaya Assembly during 2008-2013.

 

Ampareen Lyngdoh was born in Shillong into a family with strong political background. Her father Peter G. Marbaniang is a former parliamentarian who also served as Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Her brother Robert Garnett Lyngdoh is a former MLA and home minister. Her family is associated with Indian National Congress. She also had a brief association with United Democratic Party in 2008-2009, with which she won her first MLA seat. Ampareen completed her Master’s in Mass Communication from Jamia Milia Islamia University in New Delhi. She also earned a Ph.D. from the North Eastern Hill University in 2013.

 

After completing her Master’s, she took teaching as profession and was a professor of Mass Communications at St. Anthony's College, Shillong. Later she resigned from her job to get into politics. Initially she was a member of Indian Youth Congress. She was also involved with campaigns for her father and brother till she joined active politics. When Congress didn’t give her a ticket to contest state assembly elections, she joined UDP and successfully contested the elections, thus becoming the only female legislator. Later she resigned from UDP and joined Congress and she also received cabinet power.
