Amiya Kumar Bagchi Biography 
Amiya Kumar Bagchi is a very famous Indian political economist. He is the Professor of Economics and Director, Institute of Development Studies Kolkata. He has a brilliant career as an academician and has guided hundreds of students across the country in their research works. He has been associated with many leading universities across the globe as a faculty, researcher as well as a visting professor and includes - Presidency College Kolkata, University of Bristol (UK), Cornell University (USA), University of Cambridge (UK), Trent University (Canada) and Roskilde University (Denmark). Bagchi was formerly Reserve Bank of India Professor of Economics and Director, Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata and has also served many top positions as an administrator.
He has also done many research works and has also published many books on the subject of Indian Economy. He has published a four-volume history of the State Bank of India (1987-97). Other works include Private Investment in India 1900-1939 (1972), The Political Economy of Underdevelopment (1982) and The Developmental State in History and in the Twentieth Century (2004). His contributions are related to the subjects of economic history, economics of industrialization and deindustrialization, and development studies in Marxist perspectives. He also conducts research on finance and human development issues.
He was born in West Bengal in 1936. After graduation in India, he pursued higher education from University of Cambridge, where he received PhD in 1963. He began his professional career as a faculty from Presidency College, Kolkata. After serving as a professor in different educational institutions, he got retired as Reserve Bank of India professor from the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata in 2001. Noted feminist critic and activist Jasodhara Bagchi is his wife. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by Roskilde University, Denmark, and the University of Kalyani.
