Amitava Kumar Biography

Amitava Kumar is an Indian journalist and writer from Bihar. He is also a Professor of English on the Helen D. Lockwood Chair at Vassar College. Kumar has authored many English books such as Husband of a Fanatic, Bombay-London-New York, Passport Photos, No Tears for the N.R.I. (poetry), the novel Home Products and Nobody Does the Right Thing. A Foreigner Carrying in the Crook of His Arm a Tiny Bomb: A Writer’s Report on the Global War on Terror – 2010 and Evidence of Suspicion – 2009 are his award winning books.

 

Amitava Kumar was born on 17 March 1963, in the city of Arrah, Bihar. Arrah belongs to Bhojpur district. However his birth place is Patna, where he spent most of his time of formative years, and completed education as well. Then he moved to Delhi, and completed graduation in political science from Hindu College, Delhi University in 1984. He also took two master’s degrees before beginning his professional career. In 1993 he took PhD from University of Minnesota. Now he is settled in New York with his family.

 

Amitva gained recognition through a series of English books he published since 1990s. He published his first collection of poems titled - No Tears for the N.R.I. in 1996, and since then writes in full swing. Kumar has written several works of literary non-fiction. In the past two decades, he has authored books on poetry, novels, short stories, non-fiction etc. He is also a teacher by profession. Immigrant, Montana is one among his most popular novels published in the recent times. Kumar serves on the editorial board of several publications, and has scripted and narrated a few documentaries too. “Pure Chutney” (1997) and “Dirty Laundry” (2005) are his documentary works.
