Amit Khanna Biography

Amit Khanna is a film and television producer, lyricist, actor and writer. In 1995, he received National Film Award for Best Lyrics for song "Kuch Is Tarah" in the film Bhairavi directed by Aruna Raje. He was he former director of Reliance Big TV. At present, he is the chairman of Reliance Entertainment. He has also received IFFLA Industry Leadership Award in the year 2008. Khanna is sometimes credited for coining the term "Bollywood”, for Hindi cinema, by using the word, Bombay – The old name of Mumbai, film capital of India. He was the lyricist of popular songs of 1976 movie – Chalte chalte, composed by Bappi Lahiri. Another noted song is 'Madhuban khushboo deta hai' from Sajan Bina Suhagan sung by Yesudas. He has written numerous songs for music composers, Rajesh Roshan and Bappi Lahiri with whom he shares a good relationship with.

Amit Khanna was born on March 1, 1951 in New Delhi. He received degree in English literature from St. Stephen's College, Delhi in 1971. Initially he worked as a film journalist for several Delhi publications before joining the entertainment industry. He joined Dev Anand's Navketan Films as an assistant director for the movies, Shareef Budmaash and Des Pardes. Man Pasand starring Dev Anand and Tina Munim in the lead role was produced by him later. Later he produced Sheeshey ka Ghar starring Raj Babbar and Padmini Kolhapure.

He has produced a few serials for Doordarshan metro channel during middle 1990’s. Mirch Masala, Mere Saath Chal, Zameen Aasman and Business Baaten are a few among them. He produced India's first English-language series ‘A Mouthful of Sky’ in the year 1995. His association with Doordarshan began in the year 1993. He became the chairman of Reliance Entertainment in the year 2000. He writes columns for Hindustan Times and Business Standard at present.
