Amit Chaudhuri Biography

Amit Chaudhuri is an internationally recognized Indian English author and academic born in Kolkata. In 2012, Chaudhuri won the Infosys Prize for Humanities-Literary Studies for literary criticism (contemporary literature) and Rabindra Puraskar for On Tagore. In 2002 he received Sahitya Akademi Award for ‘A New World’. Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Freedom Song in 1999, Encore Award for Afternoon Raag and Betty Trask Award and Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book for A Strange and Sublime Address in 1991 are other achievements of this Indian author. In 2011 his work, The Immortals was shortlisted for DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. His works include novels, short stories, poetry and non-fiction works including critic essays.

 

Born in 1962 in Kolkata, Amit was brought up in Mumbai. He attended University College London, Balliol College Oxford and has also been Creative Arts Fellow at Wolfson College. He is married to Rosinka Chaudhuri, a professor from Kolkata. Amit Chaudhuri is also an acclaimed Indian classical musician, and an internationally recognised singer and composer. He is known for Indo-Western experimental music. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. His first novel, A Strange and Sublime Address was published in 1991, followed by Afternoon Raag (1993), Freedom Song (1998), A New World (2000) and The Immortals (2009). The Immortals – is a novel about music in the modern world.

 

Known as a musician and singer, he has released two albums in fusion music - This is not Fusion and Found Music. He published his short story collections in the year 2002 titled - Real Time: Stories and a reminiscence. St. Cyril Road and Other Poems (2005) is his poetry collection and D. H. Lawrence and ‘Difference’: Postcoloniality and the Poetry of the Present and Clearing A Space: Reflections on India, Literature and Culture are his critics’ works.
