Amit Bose Biography

Amit Bose is a filmmaker and editor of many classic Bollywood movies during 1960’s. The classic hit, Abhilasha was directed by this director. As a film editor his noted works are Bollywood classics like Sujata, Madhumati, Usne Kaha tha, Parakh, Bandini, Prem Patra and Kabooliwala. He had long term association with great filmmaker Bimal Roy as an editor and has worked with him for movies like Bandini and Madhumati. He also did the editing of ‘Shakespeare Wallah’ noted for Satyajit Ray’s work as a music composer and Shashi Kapoor’s appearance as lead actor.  

Bose was born in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand on 26 February 1930. Pramatha Nath Bose, a pioneer Indian geologist and paleontologist was his grandfather. His mother Meera Devi was a Bengali actress. His parents’ marriage resulted in a divorce and after his mother’s remarriage with Bollywood actor Pahadi Sanyal, Amit stayed with them and had a good relationship with his stepfather. Amit's mother was a cousin of great Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore. Amit was named by Tagore. During his childhood days, Amit was a student of Visva Bharati at Shantiniketan.  

Bose started his film career as an assistant director under Nimai Ghosh. His film career started in the year 1946. Later he moved to Mumbai where he worked as an assistant of Phani Majumdar at Bombay Talkies. He played a bit role in Phani’s movie, Tamasha which marked the career beginning of actress Meena Kumari. In 1952 he went abroad to study more about filmmaking. He did an apprenticeship at Pinewood Studios and A.B. Pathe in England followed by diploma in film direction, screenplay writing and film editing at Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. After his marriage in 1957, he settled in Mumbai and got associated with Bimal Roy as his Chief Film Editor.
