Ambalal Sarabhai Biography

Ambalal Sarabhai was a successful industrialist from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. A member of Sarabhai family, he was founder of Sarabhai group of Companies. Known for diversified business organizations, he started many organizations such as Sarabhai Textiles, Calico Textile Mills, Sarabhai Chemicals etc to name a few. He was a supporter of freedom struggle movement.

 

Belonging to the famous Sarabhai business family of India, many of his family members established themselves in different fields and earned success and fame. His son Vikram Sarabhai was a world famous scientist best known for his contributions towards India's space programme. His daughter-in-law Mrinalini Sarabhai and granddaughter Mallika Sarabhai were famous classical dancers. His grandson Kartikeya Sarabhai is a famous environmentalist. Anasuya Sarabhai, Gautam Sarabhai, Mridula Sarabhai and Revanta Sarabhai are among other famous members of Sarabhai business family, associated with the fields of arts, business, politics etc.

 

Ambalal Sarabhai was born on 24 March 1890 in Ahmedabad, present-day Gujarat. He belonged to a rich business family. He completed his studies from Gujarat College in Ahmedabad. Then he joined family business. He became the director of Karamchand Premchand Private Limited and became the owner of Sarabhai Chemicals in Vadodara. From there on, Sarabhai group of Companies branched into a wide range of products such as chemicals, textiles etc and provided employment to hundreds of workers.

 

Sarabhai was one of the members of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and also served as the president of the Ahmedabad Mill Owner's Association for a couple of years. Since 1916 he is known for giving his support towards freedom struggle movement, and supported Mahatma Gandhi too. Sabarmati Ashram was saved by him with his financial aid at one point of time. He married Saraladevi in 1910 and had 8 children. He passed away in 1967.
