Amal Neerad Biography

Amal Neerad is a famous cinematographer, film director, and producer of present Malayalam cinema. He was one among the graduated first batch students from Satyajit Ray Film And Television Institute of India, Kolkata. In the year 2001, he received National award for best cinematography for the diploma film Meena Jha in the short feature section, while he was studying at Satyajit Ray’s institute. Later he worked as a cinematographer under Ram Gopal Varma for the movies, James, Darna Zaroori Hai, Shiva and debut with Malayalam with the film Black, starring Mammootty. Big B marked his successful debut as a film director followed by flops like Anwar, Sagar Alias Jacky Reloaded and bachelor party. Though his movies have not fared well except his debut, his works have been noted most for wonderful camera works as well as technical aspects.

He was born on 7 October 1976 at Kollam and later moved to Kottayam. But the family got finally settled at Ernakulam, as a part of his parents’ job. His schooling and graduation were completed at Ernakulam. He studied at Maharajas College, Ernakulam where he was the college union chairman during the period, 1992 to 1994. He won the first prize in photography in the Mahatma Gandhi University Youth Festival for three consecutive years. The following year, in 1995 he joined Satyajit Ray Film And Television Institute. For his documentary film, he won National award as well as Ajaykar Award for his work as a cinematographer which earned him a scholarship to do a course in at the Babel Berg studio in Berlin.

While at Berlin, he shot a 35mm film called "Fourth World", which was shown at exhibited in India at the German Festival. Later he joined film industry as a cinematographer and now works as a director. In 2013, he directed "Kullante Bharya" segment of anthology film, 5 Sundarikal. Kunjalimarakkar is his upcoming movie.
