Aluri Chakrapani Biography

Aluri Chakrapani was a well-known filmmaker predominantly associated with Telugu cinema. He was known as a film producer, director as well as screen writer. He was also a writer and translator. Apart from Telugu, he also directed movies in Kannada too. His Kannada film, Maduve Madinodu (1965) won National Film Award for Best regional Film. His Telugu films, Maya Bazaar (1957) and Gundamma Katha (1962) have received Filmfare best film award in regional language category. He produced 35 films in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Odia and Hindi languages. Chakrapani was also a partner of Vijaya Productions, and also founded Chandamama children magazine. He also translated many classic Bengali works, and also wrote short stories and novels in Telugu.

 

He was born on August 5, 1908 in Tenali, Guntur of state Andhra Pradesh. He was born into a middle class agricultural family. He got privilege to learn Hindi from famous Hindi writer Vraj Nandan Sharma. Aluri also self learnt Sanskrit and English, and became proficient in both these languages. In 1932, he was attacked with tuberculosis. When he stayed in Madanapalle sanatorium for medical treatment, he got opportunity to learn Bengali also from one of his inmates.

 

After learning so many languages, he started off as a translator of several classic works of other languages to Telugu. His proficiency in Bengali helped him to translate the classic Bengali works of Sharat Chandra Chatterji to Telugu, and those works were well received by readers as well. He closely associated with Vijaya Vauhini Studios and its co-founder, Nagi Reddy and that’s how he entered the world of films.

 

He worked with Famous Films production house at Mumbai, and then switched to south Indian film industry. He worked in both Telugu and Tamil film industries, though he gave much importance to Telugu cinema. Patala Bhairavi, Maya Bazar, Gundamma Katha, Missamma, Shavukaru, and Appu Chesi Pappu Koodu are some of the classic and trendsetter Telugu movies he produced in association with Nagi Reddy, under the banner, Vijaya Vauhini.
