Allan Fakir Biography

Allan Fakir was a Pakistani folk singer who was born in British India in 1932 in Sindh provinces. He is widely regarded as one of the foremost exponents of Sufi music in Pakistan. His ecstatic style of performance gave him a lot of fans in the 20th century. Extreme devotional rhetoric and Sufi dance-singing were his signature styles. He passed away on 4 July 2000 in Karachi, Pakistan. Most of his songs were in Sindhi language except a few in Urdu, and most of them were surrounding Sufism. He has been honoured by Pakistan government and other cultural organizations for his tributes towards folk culture and Sufism. He was a recipient of President's Pride of Performance award in 1980 and a few more honours.

Allan Fakir was born in 1932 in Aamri village, Taluka Manjhand, Jamshoro District, Sindh provinces in British India, now a part of Pakistan. He belonged to Mangrasi tribe, who are welcomed by people during celebrations and happy occasions. His mother died soon after giving him birth. His childhood days were spent in Manjhand. His father used to beat the drum and sing traditional songs at weddings, and it’s a traditional job still followed by many members of Allan’s family.

He was illiterate, and he was taught music by his father. Allan developed a habit of singing melancholy songs during his teens, which was not liked by his father. He missed his mother’s love throughout his life, and he kept searching for true love since young. He later arrived at the tomb of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai at Bhit Shah and started living there. He was introduced to Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television Corporation by Mumtaz Mirza. "Allah Allah Kar Bhayya, Humma Humma" and "Itne bare jeewan saagar mein tu nein Pakistan diya” are his memorable songs.
