Allah Jilai Bai Biography

Allah Jilai Bai was a legendary folk singer from the state of Rajasthan who lived in the 20th century. Well versed in Maand, Thumri, Khayal and Dadra, she gave new dimensions to the field of Rajasthani folk music, which was on the verge of extinct. For her contributions towards the field of arts, especially music, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 1982. Sangeet Natak Academy honoured her with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1988 for Folk Music. As a folk singer she is best remembered for the very popular and iconic song, Kesaria Balam.

 

Allah Jilai Bai was born on 1 February 1902 in Bikaner, Rajasthan into a family of singers. Their family traditionally followed folk music and performed it. Her aunts were famous singers of their times. She started learning music at a very young age. Her initial lessons were given by Ustad Hussain Baksh Khan, followed by Achhan Maharaj for some time. By the age of 10, she already became a court singer at Durbar of Maharaja Ganga Singh, and she gave her first performance in durbar in 1912. Her style impressed the ruler so much, and she got the privilege of being the only singer to sing solo in the durbars.

 

Though she was a famed artist during her time, she remained humble throughout her life. It makes her a renowned personality and artist. Her 'Kesaria Baalam' still allures music lovers across the world, and stays fresh in the minds of every. During her lifetime she has been honoured by government multiple times, including the Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. She passed away in 1992.
