Alka Pande Biography

Alka Pande is an art critic, cultural theorist, teacher, curator, and writer, who has been associated with the world of art for nearly three decades. She holds two post graduate degrees, one in History and the second in History of Art, a PhD from Panjab University, and many other degrees. She also owns a successful academic career and has served as the Head of Department of Fine Arts, Panjab University and the Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Panjab University. She is the Recipient of the Charles Wallace Award in 1999-2000 and many other honours. She is also a prolific writer on Indology and art history. She has a special interest in Ancient Indian Erotic literature and has authored several books.

 

Alka was born in Kolkata in 1956. She completed her schooling from New Delhi and Kanpur. Later she completed double MA in History of Art from Bombay University in 1981 and Panjab University in 1983. In 1996 she earned Phd in Art History from the Panjab University. She also completed Post-Doctoral Degree from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 1999. During her research period she served as a reader at the Department of Fine Arts, Panjab University and promoted to Director of the Museum of Fine Arts in the year 2000. Since then she also works as Art Consultant at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

 

As a writer, she has an interest in Ancient Indian Erotic literature, and some of her noted published books include – Mukhwas, Leela, Indian Erotic Art, Folk Music & Musical Instruments of Punjab, Ardhanarishvara the androgyne, A Celebration of Love Article : Myriad Moods of Love, Kama Sutra - The Quest for Love etc. Most recently in 2015 she received L’Oreal Paris Femina Women Awards under Design and Arts.
