Alka Lamba Biography

Alka Lamba is an Indian politician from Delhi who is a member of Aam Aadmi Party and currently serves as an MLA of Delhi State Assembly from Gandhi Chowk constituency. She is also the founder and Chairperson of 'Go India Foundation’. Formerly associated with Indian National Congress for many years, she joined AAP in 2013 when it was clear Congress would face a major setback in the state assembly elections. As a noted member of congress party earlier, she has formerly served as the President of Delhi University Students Union, National President of National Students Union of India, General Secretary of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee and Secretary of All India Congress Committee.

Lamba was born on 21 September 1975 in Delhi. Her school and college education were completed at Delhi and she holds a PG in Chemistry and M Ed. She started her political career in 1994 during her graduation at Dyal Singh College, Delhi. The following year she got selected as the President of Delhi University Students Union as a candidate of Congress party. Later she worked as All India Girl Convener for NSUI and got selected as the President of all India NSUI in 1997. By that time she completed her Post-graduation.

She became the General Secretary of All India Mahila Congress in 2002 and contested for the state assembly elections at a young age the following year. However she was defeated by the prominent BJP leader Shri Madan Lal Khurana. Later she served several decorative positions of Indian National Congress. In 2012, she became a victim of controversies associated with 2012 Guwahati molestation case, where the victim was forced to change her name, when it got exposed through a television channel. She was widely criticized and was removed from the fact-finding committee of NCW.
