Alfred Rose Biography

Alfred Rose was a Goan tiatrist, a type of musical theatre popular in the state of Goa on the west coast of India. He is one of the most popular singers and composers of Konkani songs, belonging to cantaram category. His songs are frequently broadcasted in Panaji station of All India Radio. He composed around 5000 Konkani songs, and the sad part is there is no proper listing for his compositions. One of the great Goan composers in the post-independent era, he lived during 5 August 1932 − 21 October 2003. Even after his death, his legacy is here to stay forever, and many websites are dedicated to him.

 

His birth name is Rosario Alfred Fernandes, and he was professionally known as Alfred Rose. He was born into a musical family. His father A. M. B. Rose was a tiatrist, and his mother’s name is Dolarosa Fernandes. He was given the name Junior Rose by tiatrist C. Alvares, after Alfred made his tiatr debut in 1943 at the age of only 11. He took the stage name Alfred Rose later in 1950. The Melody King of Goa, The Man with the Golden Voice etc are some of the nicknames earned by him. He was also addressed as Konkani's Ambassador, International Superstar, and the Living Legend of Konkani Music.

 

He dedicated more than 6 decades to the field of music. He is also credited to introducing many things related to music to Konkani culture and musical world. He brought out the first Konkani audio cassette. He published 14 books with song lyrics, which he had already released as albums. He authored novels such as Vingans Monte Cristochem, Munis vo Devchar etc and acted in Konkani films like Amchem Noxib and Sukhachem Sopon.
