Ajit Seth Biography

Ajit Seth is an Indian civil servant who served as the 30th Cabinet Secretary of India during 14 June 2011 – 13 June 2015. After retirement, Seth is appointed as Chairman of Public Enterprises Selection Board. He belongs to 1974 IAS batch from Uttar Pradesh Cadre. He had stints in Industries and Cooperatives Departments in the state government during his tenure as an IAS officer. He also served as Divisional Commissioner of Kumaon Division in Nainital and District Magistrate of Mainpuri and Lucknow districts. He also holds a master's degree in Development Finance from the University of Birmingham.

 

Ajit Seth hails from Uttar Pradesh. He completed his graduation and Master’s degree in Chemistry stream from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He later took MPhil in Life Sciences from the Jawaharlal Nehru University. For advanced studies he moved abroad, where he completed his Master’s in Development Finance from the University of Birmingham.

 

He joined 1974 IAS batch from Uttar Pradesh Cadre. His professional career as a civil servant began in the mid-1970s when he served as First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations at Geneva. Later he served in the Ministry of Commerce in the early 1980s. He was the First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations at Geneva, Switzerland for next three years.

 

As an administrator and civil servant, he held several administrative positions such as Principal Secretary (Rural Development), Principal Secretary (Vigilance) and Secretary (Home and Confidential), and many more posts. He served as 30th Cabinet Secretary of India under Narendra Modi. He was appointed by the PM on 5 December 2014, giving 6 months extension.
