Ajit Pawar Biography

Ajit Pawar is a prominent politician from Maharashtra and former deputy chief minister of state. He isthe nephew of Congress leader – Sharad Pawar. Ajit belongs to Nationalist Congress Party and he has been elected to state assembly continuously for 6 terms since 1991. For all these elections he has been elected from Baramati constituency, including the latest declared 2014 state assembly elections when he defeated Prapbhakar Gawde of BJP by a majority of 60797 votes.


Ajit Anantrao Pawar was born on 22 July 1959 in Ahmednagar. His father Anantrao Pawar is the elder brother of prominent NCP leader Sharad Pawar. Ajit studied till Secondary school level and entered into active politics in 1982, during his earlier 20s. He became a member of sugar cooperative body, his first step to politics. In 1991 he was elected as the chairman of Pune District Co-operative Bank, a post he held for long 16 years. The same year he got elected to the Lok Sabha from the Baramati constituency; but vacant his seat for his uncle to be elected to P. V. Narasimha Rao's cabinet. He then stood as candidate for state assembly elections for the first time from Baramati constituency. He defeated K.H. Khanderao of BJP with a majority 9000+ votes, beginning his active career in state politics. 


Since then he has been elected to state assembly continuously for 6 consecutive terms till now, including 2014 elections. He served as Agriculture and Power minister under Sudhakarrao Naik's government in 1991-1992 and later became minister of state for Soil Conservation, Power and Planning. Under Vilasrao Deshmukh's coalition government in 1999, he was given irrigation portfolio and additional charge of the Rural Development Department when Sushilkumar Shinde came into power.

 

Ajit Pawar is married to Sunetra (née Nimbalkar Patil) sister of former minister of Maharashtra Padamsinh Patil. They have two sons named, Parth Pawar and Jay Pawar.
