Ajit Jogi Biography

Ajit Jogi is a prominent politician and leader associated with Indian National Congress. He was the first chief minister of the state of Chhattisgarh. He is a former parliamentarian too. In 2014 Lok sabha elections, he lost to Chandu Lal Sahu of BJP by a small margin of just 133 votes. He unsuccessfully conducted from Mahasamund in the assembly elections. He served as the member of Rajya Sabha for two terms (1986-1998) and General Secretary of Pradesh Congress Committee, Madhya Pradesh during the period 1987-1989. A man of many controversies, Jogi and his son were arrested in connection with the murder of NCP treasurer Ram Avtar Jaggi in 2007. Jogi is also a columnist and former IAS officer.

 

Ajit Pramod Kumar Jogi was born on April 29, 1946 in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. He excelled in academics. He completed Mechanical Engineering at the Maulana Azad College of Technology, Bhopal with a gold medal. After a short stint as a lecturer at Government Engineering College, Raipur, he got selected to Indian Police Service and Indian Administrative Service. Jogi served as a District collector of Indore during 1981-85, and has invited controversies. He was accused of stealing design papers from CAT, Indore and selling them to the CIA.

 

After his tenure as District Collector ended in 1985, he became a member of All India Congress Committee in 1986 and also got elected to Rajya sabha for the first time the same year. Since then he has served many elite positions of Indian National Congress. In 1998 he got elected as a Member of Parliament for the Raigarh constituency. In 2000, he became the first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. In 2004 he got elected to parliament in the 14th Lok sabha elections.
