Ajay Ratra Biography

Ajay Ratra is an Indian cricketer who has played for national team in the year 2002. Though his international career was short he is best remembered as a successful wicketkeeper who got selection to national team following outstanding performance in India team-A matches. He was a member of U-19 team who brought World Cup glory to India in 2000. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Manvinder Bisla, Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik are a few more wicketkeeper-batsmen who belonged to this list. He scored 112 runs in the test against West Indies in 2002 and broke the world record of youngest wicketkeeper to make a century in Tests. He is only the second wicketkeeper from India who scored a century in a foreign tour.

Ajay was born in Faridabad, Haryana in the year 1981. He came to spotlight following Team A’s win at 2000 World Cup and joined National Cricket Academy in Bangalore in the year 2000. Very soon Ratra found his place in national team as well. He made his ODI debut on 19 January 2002 v England and test debut on 19 April 2002 v West Indies. His unbeaten century against West Indies in the debut series earned him the world record of the youngest wicketkeeper batsman to score a test century. But following injuries, he was replaced by Dinesh Karthik, another wicketkeeper batsman from Team-A.

After Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s outstanding career as a wicketkeeper batsman and captain, Ajay couldn’t find place in Indian National team and he played domestic cricket. He played for Goa in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He retired from all forms of cricket in 2015 after playing 99 first class matches scoring 4029 runs at an average of 30.29. He scored 8 centuries including one double century.
