Ajay Piramal Biography 
Ajay Piramal is an Indian businessman, executive and entrepreneur from India. His name has been listed among India’s Top 50 richest people by Forbes in 2010 and his total assets worth US $1.0 Billion. Currently he serves as the Chairman and the CEO of the Piramal Group, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies of India. His wife Swati Piramal is a leading scientist who serves as the Vice chairperson of Piramal Enterprises limited. He also serves as the chairman of India’s largest private educational organisation – Pratham. He also serves in Prime Minister’s Task Force on Pharmaceuticals & Knowledge-Based Industries and Council for Trade & Industry.
He was 29 when his father died suddenly in New York. The family was involved in textile industry then. His elder brother Ashok took over the industries. But he too died after 5 years leaving behind his wife and three young children. Another brother Dilip had already decided to part from business. Thus he became the chairman of the group at a younger age. He is known for identifying opportunities ahead of the curve and in the late 1980’s, he switched over to pharmaceuticals from textile industries. It was a time when foreign pharmaceutical companies had just started exiting Indian economy and his decision to buy Nicholas Labs in 1988 at USD 4 million was the nice decision made. Nicholas Lab, an Australian MNC was to exit India in 1988.
The story of ‘Footprints’ have guided him in an inspirational way throughout his journey. By 2010, the value of the company has touched USD 3.72 billion. He has always aimed at delivering long term value for our stakeholders. This was his main principle behind success.
