Afzal Guru Biography

Afzal Guru was a Kashmiri terrorist who was convicted of for his role in the December 2001 terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament, which killed 6 Delhi police personals, two security people, and one gardener apart from all the 5 terrorists. He along with two more friends was sentenced to death. The sentence was scheduled to be carried out on 20 October 2006, but was given a stay for execution. On 3 February 2013, his mercy petition was rejected by President of India and he was hanged at Tihar Jail around 08:00 A.M. on 9 February 2013. He received terrorist training in Pakistan by Pakistan Army's retired officers and he played a key role in Indian Parliament Attack 2001, as stated by media.

 

Afzal Guru’s hanging was carried out in secrecy. He was buried inside jail grounds in Operation Three Star with full religious rites. His family was not informed before the execution, though Afzal’s last letter was received by his family members. The incident later triggered many protests across India and still going on. There was wide demand of Afzal’s burial to be handed over to his relatives.

 

Afzal Guru was born in Sopore, Kashmir on 30 June 1969. He completed schooling and later enrolled at in medical college. He completed his first year of MBBS studies. He ran a commission agency business in Sopore and in his hometown he came into contact with Tariq, a man from Anantnag, who motivated him to join Jihad for the liberation of Kashmir. He reached Muzaffarabad, became a member of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, received training and returned back to his hometown to lead 300 rebels.

 

He later completed his graduation doing odd jobs. He later took up a job with a pharmaceuticals firm. He shuttled between Srinagar and Delhi and married Tabasum in 1998. 13 December 2001 attack was conducted by the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JEM) when 9 terrorists entered into the premises of Parliament of India. The extensive investigations revealed possible involvement of four accused and one of them was Afzal Guru.
