Afzal Ansari Biography

Afzal Ansari is an Indian politician from the state of Uttar Pradesh, affiliated to Bahujan Samaj Party. He currently serves as a parliamentarian in the 17th Lok Sabha headed by Narendra Modi and represents Ghazipur constituency. He belongs to a political family, with many members belonging to Bahujan Samaj Party. Most influential names are his brothers - Mukhtar Ansari & Sibakatullah Ansari, his nephews - Abbas Ansari and Umar Ansari, while his paternal grandfather Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari was an Indian nationalist and political leader, associated with Indian National Congress and Muslim League. Mohammad Hamid Ansari - retired Indian Foreign Service officer and 12th Vice President of India is his paternal uncle, Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari’s nephew.

 

Afzal Ansari was born on 14 August 1953 into a family with strong political background. He was born in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Yusufpur-Mohammadabad is his hometown. He completed Post Graduation from University of Gorakhpur. While his grandfather Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari was a politician associated with Indian National Congress and Muslim League (but stayed in India after partition), his father Subhanullah Ansari was chairman of Nagar Palika Parishad, Mohammadabad.

 

Later Afzal Ansari and his brothers became prominent figures of Bahujan Samaj Party, within the state politics. Now the fourth generation is also into politics, with Abbas Ansari and Umar Ansari being the youngster politics, who carry the family tradition of politics. Afzal Ansari’s maternal grandfather Brigadier Mohammad Usman was an army officer. Shaukatullah Shah Ansari, an Indian politician and diplomat and Faridul Haq Ansari, politician and parliamentarian are other foremost members of Ansari family.

 

Afzal Ansari started his political career with the Communist Party of India. In 1985 he successfully contested state assembly elections from Mohammadabad legislative constituency. From 1985 to 2002 he served five terms as Member of the Legislative Assembly from same constituency. In 2004 he successfully contested Lok Sabha elections from Ghazipur, and lost in 2009 elections. Now he has been elected to Lok Sabha from same constituency.
