Adwaita Mallabarman Biography

Adwaita Mallabarman was renowned fictional writer from Bengal who lived during the period, 1 January 1914 – 16 April 1951. As a writer he is best known for his novel, Titash Ekti Nadir Naam published posthumously. It was serialized in a magazine 5 years later. The novel was later adapted on big screen by acclaimed director Ritwik Ghatak in 1973. The film was given the same title and released in Bangladesh in Bengali language. Adwaita Mallabarman died so young at the age of 37 while he was at his career peak. He also served as an editor for a few magazines. His name is also spelled as Advaita Mallabarmana.

 

Advaita Mallabarmana was born on 1 January 1914 in Brahmanbaria District, Bengal Presidency in British India. His birthplace is now a part of Bangladesh. He had three siblings. He witnessed a lot of personal losses during his younger days. He lost both his parents during his childhood days. Both his brothers died very soon, followed by his only sister who became a widow earlier. Before he reached 20, he lost all his family members. He then moved to Kolkata. Mallabarmana also had an early death at the age of 37.

 

He moved to Kolkata and lived with his uncle and completed his matriculation as well. He pursued graduation at Comilla Victoria College, but left studies in the middle due to financial issues. He belonged to Mallo community which was illiterate those days, and he was the first one from his locality to complete schooling. He started writing and publishing poetry since school days, and most of his works were published in school magazines. While at Kolkata he also served as the editor of news magazine, Navashakti.

 

Between 1945 and 1950 he authored numerous works including poetry, novel, stories, essays, and translations, and most of them were published in magazines. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1950. After handling the final manuscript of Titash Ekti Nadir Naam to his friends, he went for hospital treatment. After a couple of months of treatment, he died. His work Titash Ekti Nadir Naam was published in the monthly Mohammadi five years after his death. Still now the author is best remembered for this acclaimed work.
