Abhijit Pohankar Biography

Abhijit Pohankar is a keyboard player of Indian classical music and a fusion music composer and producer. He is the son of the famous musician of Kirana Gharana and Ghayals, Ajay Pohankar. He belongs to a family of musicians while his cousin sister Aaditi Pohankar is a film actress. Abhijit earned fame among new generation music lovers by playing Hindustani music in key board, and as a composer of fusion music, he has been associated with artists of different genres and generations. His grandmother Susheela Pohankar was a great name of the Kirana Gharana in the last century.

 

Abhijit Pohankar was born on 29 June 1975, in Mumbai into a musical family, with many generations deeply linked to music. Born as the son of famous vocalist, Ajay Pohankar, he too followed the musical path similar to other members of his family. Apart from vocals, he learnt santoor from Shivkumar Sharma for a short while. He has been interested in playing classical music on a keyboard and started off with that. Later he experimented with fusion music and succeeded in this field as well. In collaboration with his father, he released one album, Piya Bawari which was very successful. He experimented with classical music fused with lounge music for this work.

 

He has also composed the title track of the 2003 film Boom starring Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif. Some of his famous fusion works include - Panch Tatva, Urban Sufis, Tranquility, Ekant, Urban Ragas, Sajanwa, Kama Sutra, Thumri Funk, Navkaar Mantra, Deeper Zone, Shanti etc, and he has collaborated with artists like Ajay Pohankar, Ghulam Ali (Pakistan), Hariharan, Rajan-Sajan Mishra, Anup Jalota, Pankaj Udhas, Vishwamohan Bhatt, and Sonal Mansingh.
