Abhijit Mukherjee Biography

Abhijit Mukherjee is an Indian politician from West Bengal. He is the son of famous Congress politician and former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee and his wife, Suvra Mukherjee - a renowned Rabindrasangeet artist, painter and writer. His sister Sharmistha Mukherjee is a Kathak dancer, choreographer and Congress politician. Abhijit currently serves as Member of Parliament from the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency from West Bengal. He represents Congress party and assumed office in 2012. Prior to contesting in Lok Sabha, he served as an MLA of West Bengal.

He belongs to a political family of West Bengal affiliated to Indian National Congress. Mukherjee was born in a Bengali family on 2 January 1960 in Hoogly in West Bengal. Born as the son Pranab Mukherjee, a politician and Suvra Mukherjee, an artist, he chose politics as his career. His sister Sharmistha Mukherjee chose both these paths and is a successful artist and politician. His grandfather, Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee was a freedom fighter and politician. Abhijit Mukherjee completed his engineering degree in 1984 and worked for many years in corporate sector before he joined politics. As an engineer he worked with BHEL, SAIL and Maruti Udyog Limited, and also served as General Manager in charge of Corporate Social Responsibility in SAIL.

He got into active politics only in the early 2010s, when he successfully contested 2011 state assembly elections of West Bengal. He got elected to state assembly from Nalhati constituency and remained as an MLA during 13 May 2011 – 18 October 2012 before he resigned his MLA power to contest in 2012 Lok Sabha elections. He won assembly elections from Jangipur and currently serving as Member of the India Parliament.
