Abhijat Joshi Biography

Abhijat Joshi is a versatile screenwriter of Bollywood known for Vinod Chopra Productions’ directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Lage Raho Munna Bhai and 3 idiots. He co-scripted 3 idiots along with Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, for which he gathered numerous awards including best screenplay and best story at Filmfare awards. He wrote its dialogues aside Hirani for which he won Star Screen Awards. His powerful script of 2006 blockbuster, Lage Raho Munna Bhai won him National award for best script as well as Filmfare awards and Zee cine awards. Again, aside Hirani he won best dialogue writer award at Filmfare Global Indian Film Awards, IIFA and Star screen awards. He has won 3 Filmfare awards and one National award till now. For Vinod Chopra Productions’, he has scripted Ekalavya, Kareeb and Mission Kashmir also. Most recently he has written the script of Tamil hit – Nanban (2012).

Joshi was born and brought up in Ahmedabad. He was born in a family of professors. His younger brother Saumya Joshi is also professor and theater personality. He took graduation from H. K. Arts College, Gujarat and later completed MA. He received his M.F.A. from the University of Texas, Austi. While studying at Shree Vidyanagar High School in Ahmedabad, he used to participate in Gujarati dramas and has won multiple awards as an actor. He used to write stories and plays since early childhood. Writing was his passion and has written both in English and Gujarati languages.

During 1992 Gujarat riots, he wrote a playwright, "A Shaft of Sunlight", which was critically acclaimed. Vidhu Vinod Chopra happened to watch this play and subsequently gave him the works of Kareeb (1998) and Mission Kashmir (2000). Though both these movies were not big hits, his association with Hirani earned him stardom. Now he is one of the top writers of Bollywood.
