Abdul Vaheed Kamal Biography

Abdul Vaheed Kamal is a popular writer associated with Rajasthani language. He writes plays, children works and poetry in Rajasthani language and he has also contributed a few literary works to Hindi language. "Ukalti Dharti, Uphanto Abhoo" is his noted poetry work, while "Gali Ra Ladesar" and "Howde Re Dhoro" are popular Rajasthani Novels for Children and "Tu Jani Ka Main Jani" is a Rajasthani play. His Rajasthani Novel – Gharanoo earned the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award. "Rupali" is yet another popular Rajasthani Novel written by him. Char Kot, Desh ka Sipahi and Thandi Mitti are his best Hindi works.

 

He was born on 17 April 1936 in Narsara village, a place belonging to Churu district, Rajasthan. He completed his Master’s degree followed by B. Ed, both from Northwestern Jackson College. After completing his academics, he got associated with education field, apart from his literary career. He has been closely associated with Lok Kala Kendra, Bikaner and many other organizations in the education field. Sahitya Akademi Awards, Rajasthani Bhasha Sahitya Sanskriti Academy, Mahendra Jajodiya Sahitya Puraskar, Nehru Bal Sahitya Puraskar, Shivchand Bharatiya Puraskar and Allahajilaibal Mand Sansthan awards are the major honours received by him.

 

In 2002, he was one among the 22 authors from different languages who were honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Awards, 2001. Mahim Bora, Atin Bandyopadhyaya, Rajmohan Gandhi, Dhiruben Gordhandas Patel, Alka Saraogi, Attoor Ravi Varma etc were other major names who were honoured during the prestigious function. Gharano – his famous novel earned him the award. The story revolves around the killing of a newborn girl, in the feudal system of Rajasthan.
