Abdul Alim Biography

Abdul Alim was a legendary folk singer from Bangladesh of Indian origin. He was born in British India in 1931. Abdul Alim is considered as a doyen of folk music in east Bengal, and known for his timeless voice, which is still loved by music fans. A voice across time, this legendary folk singer was a recipient of numerous honours and awards also. He received Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1974 for playback in Sujan Sakhi. He died at a comparatively young age of 44 in 1975 and Bangladesh national honours such as Ekushey Padak in 1977 and Independence Day Award in 1997 were given posthumously.

 

The king of folk songs, Abdul Alim was born on 27 July 1931 in Talibpur, Murshidabad, West Bengal in British India. Alim migrated from Murshidabad of West Bengal to Dhaka after the partition of India during his teens. He established his career as a folk artist in Bangladesh after that. He enjoyed huge fan base also. His professional career began in Dhaka Radio Station, where he joined as a staff artist, and he regularly gave musical performances for Bangladesh radio. Once he performed at the Alia Madrasah in Kolkata, which proved to be turning point of his life. He received 5 gold medals and he earned music lovers from India and Pakistan as well.

 

He recorded more than 300 Gramophone records in his short-lived musical career, and also gained recognition as a popular playback singer of Bangladeshi cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. He was fully active in his musical professional till his death in 1975 at Dhakka. He was survived by 7 children. His sudden death was a huge shock to his fans. Some of his most popular songs are Ei Je Duniya Kishero Lagia, Chirodin Pushlam Ak Achin Pakhi, Holudia Pakhi Shonar Boron, Shab Shakhire Par Korite Nebo Ana Ana, Shorbonasha Padma Nodi etc.
