Aamir Raza Husain Biography

Aamir Raza Husain is a noted theatre personality and politician. The Fifty Day War (2000), based on the Kargil War and The Legend of Ram (2004), based on the epic Ramayana are his most noted outdoor stage productions. In 2001, Indian government honoured him with Padma Shri for his outstanding contributions to Indian theater. He is the Creative Director of ‘Stagedoor Theatre Company’ established in 1974. This theatre production company has staged over 91 stage plays with more than 1000 shows.

 

He was born in Lucknow on January 6, 1957. He was born as the single child to Mumtaz Husain and Kaniz Mehida. The family moved to Delhi, where he spent his childhood. He schooled at Garden School, Delhi and at the age of 10 was sent to boarding schooling, Mayo College, Ajmer. He completed graduation in history from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. During this time he actively participated in various stage shows of many leading stage directors like Joy Michael, Barry John and Marcus Murch. In 1984, he appeared in a Hollywood movie – Kim, in a small role.

 

He is known for staging many outdoor productions with the background of many monuments. Sare Jahan Se Acha, 1947 Live, Satyamev Jayate etc are a few such outdoor plays. The epic, Ramayana, was first staged in 1994. Then throughout years, it spread with 19 outdoor sets spread over 3 acres, 35 characters and a 100-member crew. This play was last staged in 2004 before the Indian President then, A P J Abdul Kalam. In 2007, he acted and directed ‘One into Two’, a comedy play written by Peter Season. He is married to actress Viraat Talwar.
