A R Raja Raja Varma Biography

Panini was a great saint who lived in India during 4th century BC. He was most proficient in grammar and his contribution to Sanskrit grammar is immensely huge. He coded full grammar for Sanskrit language and his written book is Ashtadhyayi.

 

For Keralites, there is also such a great scholar who was born on 1863 who has given significant contributions to both Malayalam and Sanskrit literature. As he is the most talented person to know about Malayalam language and its grammar he is fondly called Kerala Panini. It’s widely believed that he is the only person who can stand opposite Panini, the author of Ashtadhyayi who lived in the 4th century BC. A.R. Raja Raja Varma has written books on Malayalam grammar and he prepared full instruction set how to write Malayalam. His work, Kerala Paniniyam earned him the name Kerala Panini. 

 

A.R. Raja Raja Varma was a Sanskrit and Malayalam professor by profession. He has written 22 books in Sanskrit and 21 in Malayalam and they are from a collection of lecturer notes that he has prepared to teach his students at college. So, total collection of his books is regarded as 43 and they have been cemented as the basement of Malayalam literature in the modern style. All authors have referred his books and grammar to write their own works.

 

A.R. Raja Raja Varma was born on 1863 February 20 in Changanassery Lekshmipuram Palace as the son of Vasudevan Nambuthiri and Bharanithirunal Amma Thampuratti. Most recently his 150th birthday has been widely celebrated by Kerala on 20th February 2013. He used to read Sanskrit books and grammatical scripts once he completed his school studies. He holds a bachelor degree in Chemistry and masters degree in Sanskrit with first rank.

 

He has worked in Sanskrit college as well as Thiruvananthapuram Maharajas College. His important works of Malayalam include – Kerala Paniniyam, Vritha manjari, Bhasha Bhooshanam, Shabda Shodini, Sahitya sahyam, Madhyama vyakaranam, Prathama vyakaranam, Manideepika, Malaya vilasam, Prasada maala.  His translations include Charudathan, Malayala shakunthalam, Malavikagnimithram, Swapna vasavadatham, Bhasha kumara sambhavam, Meghadoot.

 

His Sanskrit works include – collection of 14 books titled Sahithya Kuthuhalam, Aangala samrajyam, Vida vibhavari, Thulabhara prabandam, Rigvedakarika, Rukminikaranam prabandham, Chitranakshatramala, Lakhu panineeyam, Karana parishkaranam. His interpretation works are – Bhasha shakunthalam, Marmaprakasam and Kanthara tharakam Nalacharitham.
