A. V. Thamarakshan Biography

A. V. Thamarakshan is an Indian politician from Alappuzha, Kerala who has been elected to state assembly multiple times, representing different regional party. Started his political journey in association with Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), he later became a party member of Revolutionary Socialist Party and Janathipathiya Samrakshana Samithy. He also contested state assembly elections as an independent candidate. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections he stood as an independent candidate from Alapuzha, supported by Bharatiya Janata Party.

 

A. V. Thamarakshan was born in Alappuzha on 24 April 1946 as the son of S. Velu. He is married to Dr. K. M. Sukrutha Latha and has two sons. He started his political career as a youth representative of Revolutionary Socialist Party. He is a long-term member of the party who has served the party holding several elite positions. He was a member of Central Committee and was also Kerala state secretariat member. He later became the president of United Trade Union Congress.

 

He contested Kerala Legislative Assembly elections for the first time in 1977 as an RSP candidate and got elected to state assembly. He defeated CPI (M) candidate P.K. Chandrandan. In 1980 and 1982 state elections, he retained his MLA seat representing the same party. In 1987 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, he stood as an independent candidate and managed to finish second. He was defeated by Ramesh Chennithala of INA, who was a young leader then. But in 1990 by-elections he got elected to state assembly for the fourth time.

 

In 1991 he unsuccessfully contested from Haripad constituency and regained the seat in 1996 election defeating N. Mohan Kumar of Indian National Congress. He along with Babu Divakaran was expelled from the RSP in 1999 for breaking party discipline. He joined Revolutionary Socialist Party formed by Baby John in 2001 and served as its secretary. RSP(B) joined the United Democratic Front. He unsuccessfully contested 2001 state elections from Haripad. In 2009 his party merged with Janathipathiya Samrakshana Samithy and he served as State Committee Member. In June 2012 A. V. Thamarakshan resigned from the JSS, and conducted as an independent candidate in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
