A. V. Ramanan is a very successful television host, singer and actor associated with Tamil entertainment industry. The duo has a successful musical journey spanning to more than three decades since mid-1970s. As a TV host, he is quite familiar to Tamil TV audience through the musical show, Saptha Swarangal aired in SUN TV. Ramanan has been a stage singer on the light music circuit for 34 years, and his wife accompanied him. They are the recipients of the Kalaimamani award of the Tamil Nadu Government and also of the Rotary "For the Sake of Honour" award for promoting national integration through Hindi songs.

Ramanan was interested in music likely from childhood. He has been trained music by Balamuralikrishna and P. S. Narayanaswamy. He was a member of the Madras Youth choir founded by M.B. Srinivasan and also associated with Kamesh and Rajamani's light music troupe from 1969 to 1972. At that time light music was not an acceptable form or respectable. So he started Musiano in 1973 to promote light music and give chances to youngsters who want to take music as a profession. He was looking for a female singer to accompany him. A common friend recommended Uma and this led to the founding of Musiano, and they later got married as well.

Soon after their engagement the couple got their first break for playback singing. The duo sang a duet for 1976 released Hindi film Play Boy and the first break was given by cameraman, Janakiraman. The duo sang a duet for Tamil film, Shri Krishna Leela in 1977. Since then Uma has been regular in playback singing throughout 1980s and 1990s. Though Ramanan had an inbuilt knowledge of Carnatic music, he wanted to branch off into some other form and make a mark in it which he finally succeeded.

As a television host, he successfully hosted the music show, "Saptha Swarangal" for more than 150 episodes from 1994 to 2004.
