How many times have you seen any player in a cricket match given out for obstructing the field? Well, there are not many such incidents, to be honest. But if you want to get an idea of how it is like, then you must watch the way Yusuf Pathan was given out for the same – causing an obstruction to the field side. Yusuf Pathan has become the first player in the history of T20 cricket to have been given out "obstructing the field".

The incident happened during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors India. It was the 18th over of the Kolkata innings who were chasing a target of 171 runs to win and Yusuf was in great touch. He had already scored 72 runs and was looking set to give the KKR a much-needed win.

When Pathan played a ball from Wayne Parnell, he set off for a single as the ball rolled around his legs. Parnell attacked the ball to run either of the batsmen out. However, it looked as if he had deliberately kicked the ball away from the bowler, who could do nothing. All the Pune fielders went up in an appeal. After referring t the third umpire, Pathan was asked to go.

Pathan became the first player in IPL to have been given out in this fashion. He is overall the sixth player to have been out while obstructing. There have been four such incidents in the ODIs and one in Tests. Briton Len Hutton was out in Tests. Of those given out in this way in ODIs, three of them are from Pakistan – Rameez Raja, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohd. Hafeez were dismissed in 1987, 2006 and 2013 respectively. India’s Mohinder Amarnath was another batsman in ODIs given out in 1989.

It is one dubious record that Pathan would never like to have and forget at the earliest. As a matter of fact, it came during the knock when he slammed his first fifty in almost three seasons. This dismissal of Pathan proved to be the turning point of the match and Kolkata surrendered meekly after that. Had Pathan been there, Kolkata would certainly have won the match.
