Your First Yoga Class--What To Expect

For yoga beginners willing to take up the practice of yoga it can be an overwhelming experience. They are excited, nervous and some of them are a bit intimidated by the first experience at a yoga class. They juggle with endless questions, assumptions and so much more. In order to seek answers to their questions, they go through endless websites, journals, and videos. However, refuted information can put the yoga newbies on a misguided path. It is essential that they take their first step in the right direction for an exalting experience.

Here is a list of pointers that shall expand your knowledge as what to really expect from your first yoga class. Read on the list below:

1.Arrive Early to the class: Arriving early to the class is a good idea as you can set your things in place, warm-up and prepare yourself for the practice. In certain cases, you might need to attend to some paper and other miscellaneous work. Getting it done before the start of the practice allows you to fully focus on your practice without worrying about it. At times, you may also witness that yoga teachers lock the room before the commencement of the practice as to avoid external disturbances. Make sure you are in the room before that happens. Missing the first class can be quite demotivating.

2.Start a class on a relatively empty stomach: Trying to perform the yoga poses on a full stomach can hinder your practice. Therefore, it is advisable to take a yoga class on a relatively empty stomach, but not on a completely empty stomach either. Consume a light liquid diet 2-3 hours before the class. Include fresh fruits, milk, and nuts to your diet plan so you don’t feel light-headed or fatigued.

3.Walk into the class in comfortable clothing: Dump those super-skimpy, uncomfortable, fancy and shimmery clothes that restrict your movements. Opt for stretchable, comfortable clothing that allows free maneuvering and breathing. If you are going to a Hot Yoga class where the heat of the room really makes you sweat, you need clothes that can quickly wick away the sweat. Leggings, T-shirts, tank tops, or capri pants, can be worn to a yoga class.

4.Take with you all the Yoga Essentials: Yoga mat is a prerequisite for any yoga practice. Therefore, make sure you carry a durable, high quality and comfortable yoga mat to the class. Additionally, you may also require some yoga props such as blocks, blankets, straps, etc. as per the requirement of the class. They help a practitioner get perfectly into each pose and deepen their practice. Moreover, make sure to carry with you a water bottle, extra layers of clothes, and a towel.

5.Usage Of Sanskrit Language: During your yoga classes, you shall hear a lot of Sanskrit phrases, a yogic language in use along with the English language. Several classes begin with the Mantra chanting for a spiritualistic experience. In all likelihood, you may not understand the Sanskrit words, pronunciation and its meaning. Do not get restless, be patient and listen to the teacher carefully and slowly you shall learn the yoga terminology, Sanskrit words, and names of asanas too.

6.Yoga Etiquettes: It is always good to follow some rules and etiquettes for structured yoga practice. Try to arrive 5-10 minutes early to the class so that you can set up the things and prepare yourself for the practice. Place your footwear in a proper cubicle and after the class wrap up your stuff and tidily stack them. Yogis do not converse much in between the class. They usually wait for the session to wind up before indulging in talks.

Thoroughly read these points and fully prepare yourself for yoga endeavor and savor an enriching yoga class.
