What Made Vaiko Popular?

 

The wish of every growing politician is not be lost in the crowd and so to achieve this they made stunts quite often. Vaiko, the politician from Tamil Nadu is one such person who wants to establish his presence election after the election. His original name Vai Gopalsamy is not known to many people as he is always called Vaiko. He started his political career from his younger days and got the Rajya Sabha seat in 1978. He served thrice as the member of Rajya Sabha and twice as the member of Lok Sabha.

 

He started the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party called MDMK in 1994. Before that period he was actively involved in DMK party. He participated in many agitations and was sentenced to jail several times. During the time of MISA he was detained with other party leaders. He had been the second important leader in the DMK party. But when the importance for Stalin, the son of the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi increased, he came out of the party to form his own.

 

One main reason for his popularity is his style of speaking. He used to quote events from history and this pulled many people towards him. The youngsters have a liking for him. His sympathy for the Tamils in Sri Lanka is world famous. Though some say that he is using Eelam for his own political ends, he never cares about that and continues to voice for their sake. His hard hitting speeches in Rajya Sabha made him being called as the Tiger of the Parliament. He was a fulltime speaker in the propaganda meetings of the DMK party before he started his own.

 

The most interesting news about him is his going into the jungles of Vavuniya to meet the LTTE leader Prabhakaran. He had to face opposition from all angles for this daring act. The rift between Vaiko and DMK president Karunanidhi widened and he was expelled out of the party according to the decision taken by the general council. Some of the important spearheads of the DMK party came out to support him.

 

After starting MDMK party, he started his padhayathra from Kanyakumari to Chennai in order to bring his party ideas to limelight. He often criticizes AIADMK government and its leader J. Jayalalitha. He is considered to be an honest politician. With the help of the funds collected, he bought own building for his party and named it Thayagam. A party weekly called Sangoli that carries news about the party and its workers is run by him. He is said to change his coalition quite often. In 2006 assembly elections of Tamil Nadu, he formed alliance with AIADMK. But this alliance soon split.

 

He was arrested under the POTA act in 2002 for his controversial speech supporting the banned LTTE movement. He had to spend 18 months in prison at that time. He started the Marumalarchi Blood Donor’s Club in 2005. He made all the villagers of his village to participate in the three day tank desilting program. It could be easily said that what made Vaiko photos and Vaiko videos famous is his ferocious and inspirational speech.
