Kuttanad – The most beautiful place of Kerala, splendid in green, paddy fields and wet lands! When someone thinks about Kerala, the first thing that comes to his mind is the cool breeze of Kuttanad backwaters. Kuttanad is one among the two rice bowls of old Travancore.  Let me give you a few more details that make you love this ‘Nature’s gift’.

 

There are still disputes about the name – Kuttanad. A few say that Kuttanad means ‘The land of the person named Kuttan’. But who is Kuttan? No one knows! Is it Karumadi kuttan, the traditional god of the fields of Kuttanad or some King or peasant with the name Kuttan? Or does it mention Dravidain culture? Anyhow, the soil’s colour is oil black.  

 

Kuttanadan Puncha – Each state and region has its own culture, tradition and songs related to their culture and way of life. If someone thinks about Kuttanad, the traditional song that comes to his mind is none other than Kuttanadan Punchayile…….This boat song is related to life style and green paddies of Kuttanad.

We can divide Kuttanad into three distinct regions. They are divided on the basis of the elevation from sea level, either above or below. The paddy fields of Kuttanad are spread across three districts – Alapuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta. It covers area around 50K hectares of land too. 37% of rice production of the state goes to Kuttanad.

 

A lot to see – Long spread back waters, house boats, green paddy fields, coconut trees and lovely breeze across the lake surface. Kuttanad offers you a lot of things to see. That’s the reason why Kuttanad is one among the most sought tourist destinations of Kerala. It also offers you variety of fish dishes, tapioca, duck, toddy, oysters and crabs to taste. Yet, industrialization pollutes the back waters of Kuttanad a lot!

Kuttanad is the paradise of migrating birds too. Due to splendid in natural resources, Kuttanad invites not only tourists but also variety of birds and animals to the region. During season, they reach in flocks and their number often exceeds 20,000. More than 65 item fishes and 14 items of other marine food items are the specials of Kuttanad.
