Waheeda Rehman - A Blessed Artist Of 1960's

Waheeda Rehman belongs to the versatile group of talented actresses who are remembered for their acting skills as well as deep knowledge in Indian classical dances. We saw her as an excellent dancer in Guide – a movie that got wide critic appreciation in India as well as international markets. Apart from Guide, she is known most for her roles in Reshma aur Shera, Neel Kamal, Saheb Biwi aur Gulam, CID, Pyaasa, Kaagaz ka phool, Kohra, Khamoshi, Chaudwini ka chand, Bees Saal Baad and Mujhe jeene do. It can be said that she has given her most memorable performances of her career for Guru Dutt films like Pyaasa and Kaagaz ka phool, the roles for which she is popular till now.

Before she joined Bollywood, she was a trained dancer of Bharatanatyam from Chennai and had done a few south Indian films as well. She debut Bollywood playing a vamp’s role in CID and later we have seen this actress growing to fame through her unique skills and dancing talents. After Guru Dutt, she has been most successful with Dev Anand with whom she has done Kaala Baazar, CID, Guide and Solva Saal. It is the movie CID for which both these actors are known most. Her role as a classic dancer Rozy, her drift towards mentor Dev Anand and the unfolded love story between these two were pictured beautifully in each frame, for which it can be numbered among the best classics of Bollywood all time.

She was successful with each and every leading hero of Bollywood that time. Her classic movies of late 50’s and early 60’s kept her in momentum in the next decade too and Khamoshi was one such movie of 1970, which is best remembered for her performance. Though the movie was shot during late 60’s when Rajesh Khanna was a struggling actor of Bollywood, the success of Aradhana gave super stardom to him in 1969 which eventually helped a lot in repeating the same successes onscreen and Khamoshi belongs to that category too.

She won her Filmfare award for Guide and National awards for Reshma aur Shera. After a short break she returned to movies and was busy in the industry till Lamhe of 1991. She is still counted one among the best for her performances in Guide and Pyaasa.
