Virender Sehwag - The Nawab Of Najafgarh

Virender Sehwag was born on 20th October 1978 at Delhi. He was born into a Jat family from Haryana. His father, Mr. Krishan Sehwag is a grain merchant and his mother is Mrs. Krishna.  He studied in Arora Vidya School in Delhi. He did his graduation from Jamia Milla Islamia in Delhi. He started playing domestic cricket for Delhi in 1997. He played for North Zone in the Duleep Trophy. He played with the Under -19 team that toured South Africa in 1997. He also played for Leicestershire in 2003.

Virender Sehwag is popularly known to his teammates as `Viru’. He is an opening right hand batsman and a right arm off spin bowler. He made his test debut against South Africa at Bloemfontein on 3rd November 2001. He made his one day international debut against Pakistan at Mohali on 1st April 1999. He has so far played 87 tests scoring 7,694 runs with 22 centuries and 27 fifties with a top score of 319. He has taken 39 wickets and 61 catches.  He has played 236 one day matches scoring 7,760 runs with 14 centuries and 37 fifties with a top score of 175. He has taken 92 wickets and 84 catches. He has played 429 first class matches scoring 20,213 runs with 46 centuries and 91 fifties. He has taken 230 wickets and 225 catches. He has played 14 T 20 internationals scoring 313 runs with two half centuries and has not taken any wickets.

Virender Sehwag is also known as `Zen Master of Modern Cricket’. He was voted as Wisden’s cricketer of the Year in 2008 as well as in 2009. He holds multiple records in batting with top scores for India. First, he holds the record for the highest score made by an Indian in test cricket with his 319 scored against South Africa. The other record is that this triple century is the fastest in the history of test cricket beating Sir Donald Bradman’s record. He also holds the record for the fastest 250 that he made against Sri Lanka. He is one of the four batsmen in the world to record triple centuries more than once in their career. The leader is Sir Donald Bradman followed by Brian Lara and Chris Gayle. He remains as the only player to make a triple century and take five wickets in an innings. On 11th March 2009, he made the fastest century scored by an Indian in a one day international in 60 balls. His scoring rate in both tests and one dayers is very high with a strike rate of 103.44. Only one player has a higher strike rate than him and that is Shahid Afridi.

Virender Sehwag has been titled as the `Nawab of Najafgarh’ and has been compared to Sachin Tendulkar in his early days due to a similar batting style and appearance. Sehwag has acknowledged many times that he has consciously tried to style his play making Tendulkar as his model in his youth.
