Virender Sehwag became the first Indian to score a century in the current season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He slammed 122 runs in just 58 balls that included 12 fours and eight huge sixes. But before that he completed his century in exactly 50 balls.

It was primarily due to the stroke-play of Virender Sehwag that Punjab could post such a huge total of 223 runs. From the start one knew that it was a batting pitch and that a total close to even 200 runs would not be safe and it was proved as well.

It was proved by Suresh Raina who scored 87 runs in just 25 balls and was staring at one of the fastest centuries in the shortest format of the game. Raina also hit 12 boundaries and six sixes. However, after his dismissal all Punjab needed was to hold on to the advantage to win the match.

Coming back to Sehwag, this was certainly a vintage Viru who showed his true batting talents after a long, long time. It was indeed a pleasure to watch him bat as all the Chennai bowlers were taken to the sword. Every bowler was treated equally by Sehwag and hardly showed any mercy.

Sehwag was more attacking initially as he took advantage of the powerplay overs. Coming out to bat with Vohra, he put 110 runs in 10.4 overs. He required just 21 balls to reach the 50-run mark. Until that he had stroked seven boundaries and a couple of sixes.

The attacking opener had come out with only one intention and it was written large on his face. All the bolwers got enough pounding as Virender hit the ball hard almost every time. He timed the ball so well that once it made good contact with the bat, it was certainly going to sail over the ropes. None of his sixes were short of the ropes.

By the time Sehwag scored his century, he had faced 50 balls and had hit 10 fours and six sixes. Once he had crossed the mark, then there was no looking back. The same kind of stroke-play continued for some more time until he was dismissed on 122 runs by Ashish Nehra.
