In one of the most exciting run chases, Virat Kohli blasted exactly 100 runs in 52 balls and to top it all remained not out, registering the fastest ODI century by any batsman. This also is the seventh fastest century ever in ODI history. The hurricane knock allowed India to overcome a massive target of 360 runs. The batting by Kohli, who is seen as the future captain of India, was a fiery piece of classic stroke play that left the Aussies with little to experiment with.

It was an innings that was studded with eight fours and as many as seven sixes. Kohli scored his century in just 52 balls. Earlier, he had scored his half-century in 27 balls. He left nothing to choose from as he raced to 50 runs (in 27 balls) and then from there to his century (in 25 balls).

He was in partnership with Rohit Sharma for only 17.2 overs in which the two batted at a rate of 10.73 runs per over. The two put on 186 runs for the second wicket. That was tremendous batting, especially against a team like Australia that is not that easy to go after. However, it was their day and everything was very cutely falling in place for the Indian batsmen.

Kohli was always in the aggressive mood as he scored 100 of those 186 runs, while Rohit contributed 78 runs. Once Rohit Sharma reached his century, he gave more strike to Virat and played out some dot balls which was understandable. The fact is that both batsmen could afford to relax a bit even when chasing such a huge score shows the foundation they had got earlier and which they maintained.

The beauty of Virat’s innings was that he never seemed under pressure even when India was chasing such a huge total. Playing the natural game can help any batsman in any condition and Kohli has proved that in this innings. He was more aggressive against the spinners like Maxwell and Doherty. With good use of the feet, he sent the ball back 20 rows back on more occasions than one.

It is a knock that will remain fresh in the minds of the Kohli fans for many more days to come.
