It was the time during middle 90’s. Chitra was ruling the South Indian music. She was given almost main songs of Malayalam. Suddenly a new composer from south who has been giving beautiful songs to Telugu landed in Malayalam music through Kamal’s movie Azhakiya ravananan. Mammooty and Bhanu Priya played the leading roles of the movie. A rain song pictured on Bhanu Priya was given to Sujatha by Vidya sagar. There began a new era of a new combination in Malayalam songs. The song not only was a super hit, but it gave rise to a new Music director of Malayalam. Both Vidya Sagar and Sujatha won the state awards that year. It was after a long monopoly of Chitra of 11 years, Sujatha won the best singer award for the first time. From 1985, the first time for which Chitra received this award till 1995, she was the solo receiver of this award.

Then begin a string of hits in Vidya Sagar – Sujatha combination. One year later, both of them won state awards again for magical songs of Pranayavarnangal (Colours of love). Varamanjaladiya – composed with a poetic touch fetched the second state award for Sujatha.  Then came Summer in Bethlehem, Meesa madhavan, Chandranudikkunna dikkil, Madhura nombara kaattu, Dreams, Niram, Millenium stars, Ustad, Dost, Randaam Bhavam, Gramaphone, CID Moosa, Hulchul, Rasikan, Mambazhakalam, Kilichundan Mampazham, Chandrolsavam, Kochi rajavu and many more in this combination. If we look back at the past few years of Malayalam movies since 1995, majority of hit songs include this amazing pair. No doubt, Vidya Sagar gave new life to her career when she was sinking in Malayalam singing field.

Vidya Sagar made use of her voice wisely and that’s the reason why, their combination songs have always regained the top position of chart busters. Dwadeshiyil of Madhura Nombara kaattu, raftha Raftha of Hulchul, Manju peyyana of Chandranudikkunna dikkil, Thathamma penne of Dosth, Mizhiyariyathe of Niram, Manimuttathavani of Dreams, Karimizhi kuruvi and Ente ellam from Meesa Madhavan, Marannittumenthino from randam Bhavam, Kandu kandu kani kond from Mambazhakalam, Ethrayo ganmamaayi from Summer in Bethlehem, Aararum Kaanathe from Chandrolsavam, Chilamboli Kaatte from CID Moosa and Mundiripadam from Kochi rajavu real assets of Malayalam cinema.

When a string of successful songs hit the chartbusters other music directors also make use of Sujatha’s voice in Malayalam songs.  Vidyasagar’s award winning songs of Tamil movie Poovellam un vasam starring Jyothika and Ajith were given to Sujatha. They created magic in Tamil too, winning almost all awards both in composition and singing category. So, let us wait to get more beautiful numbers of one among the best combinations of South Indian Music.
