Vedas

India has a very old and advanced culture. The good traditions and virtues are the results of the culture which has survived for generations. But, where lays the foundation of this culture? The Vedas are considered to be the valuable foundation of the Bharatha samskaram (Indian culture). The Vedas clearly reveal the infinitely wide and deep sciences and mysteries of nature and universe. The Knowledge and wisdom for man, both in spiritual and physical worlds, not for one generation only, but for all the generations are being revealed through the Vedas.

There are four Vedas: Rig veda, Yajur veda, Sama  veda and Adharva veda. Let us see what the contents of each of these Vedas are. Rig veda is based on praises or thanks giving.  Everything in the universe is considered as goddesses and is being praised and revered. This veda contains all the knowledge related to the sciences in the workd, in a condensed form. As part of the veda, thera are the structures, grammar and linguistic qualities required for languages (these are, siksha, chandus, nirukkam and vyakaran). Yajur veda is basically duty based.

The veda specifies how to execute our duties effectively. It clearly defines, the good deeds, the vice ones, and the methods of doing such duties and then what are the results expected of these deeds. All duties are to be observed as Yajnas (revered services to God). The Yajur veda also teaches, how to execute duties without thinking about the results of the karma (deeds) done. This philosophy is known as Nishkama Karama. Sama veda is music based and art-centered. The veda provides music to various mantras and explains the various methods of chanting Mantras with proper music.

In addition, the various art forms observed in the Indian culture are all contributions of Sama Veda. This includes acting, other forms of art, sculpture, etc., Atharva veda is the fourth of the veda. Atharva veda contains more than 12,000 Mantras. The main theme of the veda is conservation and preservation. Atharva veda explains how man has to make use of natural resources effectively so that it can be properly conserved. It also clearly states how to preserve nature and its resources. So it can be stated that Atharva veda is dealing with the principles and strategies for Nature and Environment Conservation.
