Unhappy Endings Of Bollywood

Masala Bollywood is most famous for its happy endings too. How many times have we witnessed, even while remaking south Indian tragedies to Hindi, it end with a smiling end. Best instance is remakes of Malayalam blockbuster Chitram. When it was made with a happy ending of union of Gauthami and Mithun Chakraborthy (Pyar hua hai chori chori) in the climax, the real soul of the movie was lost even though audience left the theatre with a smile. But there are a few instances in Bollywood where audience left theatres with a tear on their cheek. Through this column let me mention a few of such movies.

Do Bheega Zameen: This movie is not a romantic thriller, but the story of a peasant who tries to get his land back by running rickshaw in the city. Even then he was not able to accumulate the money. Its unhappy climax has placed it in the classic category of Indian movies.

Mughal-E-Azam: Perhaps, the most expensive film made on Indian screen. As in real life, Akbar was not able to marry the dancer Anarkali, so is the movie too. Despite being so close, the lovers separate. Yet the movie ran in full packed houses for months and years.

Devdas: It’s another classic of Dilip Kumar. It was again remade in 2002 Shah Rukh Khan reprised the role of Dev. Though the hero couldn’t win heroine and he dies at last, both the movies did fairly well at box office.

Kal ho na ho: It’s one among the best performances of Shah Rukh Khan till now and its climax made the audience cry a lot.

Muquaddar ka sikander: In the climax we witnessed the death of both Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan. Rekha loves Amitabh, Amitabh loves Rakhi and Rakhi loves Vinod Khanna. Only the love of Rakhi and Vinod Khanna becomes fruitful.

Kaagaz ke phool: The whole movie is a flashback of the rise of a film director and his downfall. In the climax we see, the director dead sitting in his Director chair in his studio. The movie was a heavy dose to audience and audience couldn’t accept it easily. The movie was a big flop despite getting the classic tag.

Now let me mention a few more such movies – Sholay, Baazigar, Tere Naam, Guide, Qayamat se qayamat tak, Rock star, Ek duje ke liye and Sadma. Though people love to see happy ending, we can’t deny the fact that unhappy endings stay in our hearts for quite a long time than usual.
