U A Khader - In Search Of His Lost Childhood

What has technology given to us? A lot of things including world wars and micro wave oven; computers and flying jets, philosophers, thinkers and medicines and many more! Yet to Keralites, it has given a great writer named U.A.Khader. You might wonder how it happens so. If Second World War has not happened, perhaps a writer named U.A.Khader might not have born!

U A Khader is the son of a Kerala Muslim Moiddeenkutty Haji to a Burma woman, Mamaidi. Mamaidi passed away three days after the birth of U A Khader. Second World War came and bombs were rained in Rangoon town by war planes. The son of Mamaidi was only 7 years old then. He was carried to Chittagong, then to Kolkata and at last, by sailing in a ship he reached Kozhikode, Kerala. It was quite natural. He lost his mother’s homeland and his mother tongue. Children kept themselves away from this child with Mongolian look. He even faced bad remarks from his society. But since childhood, he kept everything in mind as a bruise wound.

All those writings written by this great writer were just a search of the source of those unknown pains caused by those wounds. His writings are a bit standard comparing others. Sometimes it reaches unknown shores to find some answers. “Ormakalude Pakoda” is one such rare contribution given by this great writer to Malayalam. When this person reached his motherland after 68 years fearing soldiers, soldiers have not left the place yet!

In search of ‘died’ childhood, Khader reaches his hometown Billin. He has no relationship with the country since he escaped from there. His father’s silent tear was the reply whenever he asked him questions. He was silent till 80, when he passed away.  In the memories of Khader, Billin is just like a faded finger print. He just remembers the smell of a fruit that he has tasted in his childhood.

For all its inhabitants, Burma is Myanmar now. Yet for Khadar he still believes in old Burma as his childhood memories are related to it. They are well reflected in his writings too. In all his writings, there are deep finger prints of streets and shops that he has picked from his own childhood memories. Years later, when he travels through those streets he finds a few smiling faces about whom his wife comments, “I think, they are your relatives. You two have striking similarities”. With his old photograph, he searched the whole streets to find someone who can identify him. When he returned back, his mind was filled with pain as he couldn’t find at least one relative there.
